Will retailer Ocado change the way we shop?
Ocado likes to think of itself as the Amazon of the supermarket world, a claim that produces some guffaws from leading executives of other retailers. Sir Terry Leahy, the former chief executive of Tesco, was dismissive of the young upstart, asking why would he want to spend millions of pounds on a delivery system only to see it operating at a loss.
But I still believe there is something in the share price move last week beyond the fact that it will have burnt a lot of the short-sellers in Ocado. Data Explorers, the stock market analysts, estimate that 13.1pc of Ocado’s stock was out on loan at close of trading on Wednesday – a figure which has kept strong downward pressure on the company’s share price performance.
