U.S. short interest rebounds amid fresh negative sentiment

With the S&P 500 already 2.4% down on the March close, short sellers have proportionately increased positions by a similar amount targeting names in the diversified consumer services, food retailing, marine and for-profit education sectors.

Supermarkets are used to the challenge of catering to customers in a recession, but protecting profits during a prolonged slowdown in consumer spending has thrown up challenges. Unusually, we find that some of the world’s largest global brands appear amongst the list of most shorted names.
