Short Selling Perspectives on the Third Anniversary of the Credit Crunch - Securities Finance Daily Report

CNBC invited us to participate in a discussion about the third anniversary of the credit crunch from a short selling perspective. Given the time constraints of live TV we have much more to say than space allowed so we shall air our views here in 2 parts. The aim is to skate over the short selling experience since August 07 to see if it helps us predict the nature of borrowing demand henceforward.
Today focuses on the period pre the full blown crisis up until the end of 08. Short selling moved in this period from being the preserve of the brave, to being THE skill, and finally to being highly challenging. Tomorrow we will review what happened from March 09 and reflect on where we are now. The graphic summarizes our Long Short Ratio relative to the S&P 500 index.
